How Which is higher? works

Two five-card hands, no board. Pick the higher one, or Tie when they're exactly equal. It's the warm-up for Which hand wins?, where you first have to find each player's best five cards.

Each round mixes hands of different kinds with close calls: the same kind of hand, the same pair with different kickers, and one tie.

How to compare two hands

  1. Higher on the list wins. A flush beats any straight, and a full house beats any flush. See the hand rankings.
  2. Same kind of hand? Compare the main cards first: the pair, the three of a kind, or the top card of a straight or flush.
  3. Still level? Go down the other cards, the kickers, one at a time from the highest.
  4. Suits never break a tie. Two hands with the same ranks are equal.

Questions

When is it a tie?

When both hands have the same five ranks in the same pattern, like two straights to the nine. In a real game the pot is split.

Does a flush ever lose to a straight?

Never. Any flush beats any straight, because five cards of one suit are harder to get.

Do I need an account?

No. The beginner drills are free and need no account.

Can I use the keyboard?

Yes: ← and → choose Hand A or Hand B, ↓ chooses Tie, ↑ clears, and Enter locks it in, then moves to the next hand.
